Understand the species’ needs

Identify the species’ UVB requirement before buying a lamp. UVB output depends on lamp type, distance, reflector, mesh, and age. A bulb that still emits visible light may no longer provide the intended UVB output.

Set up and measure correctly

Follow the lamp maker’s distance and replacement guidance and avoid placing glass or plastic between the lamp and the basking area unless the product is designed for it. Provide shade and places to retreat so the animal can regulate exposure.

Maintain a safe routine

Coordinate UVB, heat, diet, and calcium supplementation as one husbandry plan. More UVB or supplements are not automatically better; excessive or inappropriate exposure can cause harm.

  • Use species-specific temperature, lighting, humidity, and diet guidance.
  • Check equipment and readings regularly.
  • Record changes so problems can be spotted early.
