How to Set Up a Safe, Enriching Cage for a Pet Bird
Choose a species-appropriate bird cage with safe bar spacing, varied perches, enrichment and a healthy location.
A pet bird's cage should be a secure home base that allows comfortable movement, resting and play. The right cage depends on species, size, beak strength and activity level.
Choose dimensions and bar spacing
Prioritize usable space and enough room for the bird to spread its wings and move between perches. Bar spacing must prevent the head or body from becoming trapped. Choose sturdy, bird-safe construction and avoid finishes that may be toxic if chewed.
Arrange perches and bowls
Provide perches of different safe diameters and textures to encourage varied foot positions. Position them so droppings do not contaminate food or water. Keep bowls stable, clean and easy to reach.
Add enrichment and reduce hazards
Offer species-appropriate toys for chewing, shredding and foraging. Inspect for loose threads, sharp edges and damaged clips. Many birds need supervised time outside the cage in a bird-proofed room. Keep the cage away from kitchen fumes, smoke, aerosols and extreme temperatures. Clean food and water dishes daily. Changes in appetite, droppings, breathing or activity warrant prompt advice from an avian veterinarian.
