A well-fitted dog harness can make daily walks more comfortable. Choose one based on your dog's chest measurement, body shape and walking habits rather than breed alone.

Measure and check the fit

Use a soft tape measure and compare your results with the manufacturer's size chart. The harness should sit securely without rubbing behind the front legs or restricting shoulder movement. You should generally be able to slide two fingers beneath the straps, while ensuring your dog cannot back out of it.

Compare styles

Step-in harnesses can suit dogs that dislike equipment pulled over their heads. A well-designed Y-shaped harness may allow natural shoulder movement. Front-clip designs can help some dogs practise loose-leash walking, but no harness replaces training.

Prioritize safety

Look for sturdy stitching, secure buckles, adjustable straps and reflective details for low-light walks. Inspect clips and seams regularly. Introduce the harness gradually with treats and short sessions, and remove it if it causes chafing or distress. Pair it with a suitable leash and reward calm walking. If your dog shows pain or severe pulling, seek guidance from a qualified trainer or veterinarian.
