Cat Scratching: How to Choose and Place Scratching Posts

Choose stable, tall, textured scratching posts and place them where cats naturally stretch, mark territory, and wake up.

Scratching is normal feline behaviour: it helps cats stretch, maintain their claws, and leave visual and scent signals. The aim is to provide appealing, appropriate surfaces—not to punish the cat for scratching.

Match the surface and height

Offer a sturdy post tall enough for your cat to stretch fully, plus a horizontal scratcher if your cat prefers floors or rugs. Sisal, corrugated cardboard, and other textures can appeal to different cats. A post that wobbles or tips may be rejected, so check the base and fixings.

Place posts where scratching happens

Start near a favourite sleeping spot, a room entrance, or the furniture currently being scratched. Cats often stretch and scratch after waking. Protect targeted furniture temporarily while making the new post easier to reach.

Reward the right choice

Invite exploration with play or a treat near the scratcher; reward use calmly. Avoid grabbing the cat’s paws and forcing them onto the post. Keep claws maintained as advised by your vet or groomer, and provide multiple scratching options in multi-cat homes.

Practical checklist

  • Make the setup safe and easy to access.
  • Introduce changes gradually and observe your cat’s response.
  • Keep routines predictable and adjust for age, mobility, and temperament.

When to seek professional advice

If scratching behaviour changes suddenly or the cat appears painful when using a post, ask your veterinarian to check for discomfort.
