A suitable rabbit habitat needs more than a small cage. Rabbits need safe space to hop, stretch fully, stand upright and explore. A roomy exercise pen or rabbit-proofed area can provide a better everyday environment than a compact enclosure alone.

Plan space and flooring

Allow several hops in a row and separate resting, feeding and toileting zones. Use secure, non-slip flooring that is gentle on feet. Avoid exposed wire flooring and protect electrical cords, houseplants and baseboards before exercise time.

Provide essentials

Offer unlimited suitable grass hay, fresh water and a diet recommended for your rabbit's age and health. Include a litter tray with rabbit-safe litter, a sturdy hideaway and a comfortable resting area.

Add safe enrichment

Cardboard tunnels, untreated chew items and simple foraging activities encourage exploring. Check toys for small detachable pieces, sharp edges or unsafe coatings. Remove soiled litter and uneaten fresh foods routinely and keep the habitat clean. Changes in appetite or droppings require prompt veterinary advice. A healthy habitat combines space, appropriate diet, cleanliness and daily observation.
