Quarantine can reduce the risk of introducing parasites or infectious disease to an established reptile collection. The exact duration and testing plan should be set with a reptile veterinarian.

Understand the species’ needs

Keep the new reptile in a separate enclosure in a separate area where practical. Use dedicated feeding tools, water bowls, cleaning supplies, and hand hygiene. Prevent shared equipment or substrate from moving between enclosures.

Set up and measure correctly

Record the animal’s origin, feeding, weight where appropriate, shedding, droppings, and behaviour. Arrange an initial veterinary assessment and ask whether parasite testing or other screening is appropriate for the species.

Maintain a safe routine

Only end quarantine when the planned observation period and any recommended tests are complete. Clean and disinfect equipment between uses and handle established animals before quarantined animals when practical.

Care checklist

  • Use species-specific advice rather than a one-size-fits-all routine.
  • Keep written records of relevant changes.
  • Prioritise hygiene and a secure habitat.

When to seek expert help

If the new reptile has diarrhoea, mouth lesions, nasal discharge, or refuses food persistently, contact a reptile veterinarian and maintain separation.
