A healthy aquarium starts before the fish arrive. Careful setup helps establish stable water conditions and reduces the risk of exposing fish to harmful waste compounds.

Choose a suitable tank and filter

Select an aquarium appropriate for the species' adult size, activity and social needs. Use a filter suited to the tank and stocking level, and place the aquarium on a level stand designed to support its weight.

Cycle before adding fish

Aquarium cycling establishes beneficial microorganisms that process fish waste. Learn about fishless cycling and use a reliable test kit to monitor ammonia, nitrite and nitrate. Clear water does not necessarily mean the aquarium is ready. Wait until the cycle is established and water parameters suit the intended species.

Test and maintain water

Use a suitable conditioner for tap water and test temperature, pH, ammonia, nitrite and nitrate. Research species compatibility before choosing a community. Acclimate new fish according to reliable species-specific guidance, avoid overcrowding, feed modest amounts and remove uneaten food. Test more frequently during the first weeks and after adding livestock. Stable water quality is the foundation of fish care.
