Scratching is normal cat behaviour: it helps cats stretch, maintain their claws and leave scent marks. A suitable cat scratching post gives your indoor cat an appropriate outlet and may help protect furniture.

Choose a stable design

Many cats enjoy stretching vertically, so select a post tall enough for your cat to extend comfortably. A broad, heavy base helps prevent tipping. Sisal, corrugated cardboard and other textured materials can appeal to different cats, so observe what your cat already prefers.

Match the orientation

If your cat scratches sofa sides, try a vertical post. If it scratches rugs, add a horizontal scratcher. More than one option can help in multi-cat homes.

Place it well and maintain it

Position the scratcher near a favourite resting place or the furniture your cat already targets. Encourage exploration with play or treats and reward use calmly; never force your cat's paws onto the surface. Check regularly for loose parts, exposed staples or instability and replace damaged posts. Regular play and environmental enrichment complement a good scratching surface.
